Amado Chaves

Chaves was a lifelong Republican and an active political figure in New Mexico during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1891, Governor L. Bradford Prince appointed him as the first Territorial Superintendent of Schools. During his tenure, he defended bilingual education in New Mexico. In the first decade of the twentieth century, he served as Mayor of Santa Fe, Territorial Senator, and Tax Commissioner.
