In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Article VIII states that the property of Mexicans living in the ceded territories would be protected under U.S. administration. This article also granted these people the period of one year to declare their intentions to become U.S. citizens or to remain citizens of the Mexican Republic. If they made no such declaration, they were to become U.S. citizens by default.
