A legend during his own lifetime, Kit Carson was known as a heroic western guide, trapper, and soldier. Although he was deeply conflicted about the order to force the Navajo people on the Long Walk to the Bosque Redondo in 1863, Carson carried out a brutal scorched-earth campaign that forced most of the Diné to leave their homeland for the misery and suffering of Hwéeldi. n
