A German immigrant to the United States, Fritz served as a Captain with the California Column commanded by General Carleton in 1862. Following his efforts to secure New Mexico for the Union during the Civil War, he purchased land near Fort Stanton and went into business with Lawrence G. Murphy. Although his association with Murphy and Dolan’s House in Lincoln County brought him great wealth, Fritz returned to Germany in the early 1870s. He died of kidney disease in Stuttgart in 1874.
