During the Spanish-Cuban-American War, Armijo served with Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. Following the conflict and with Roosevelt’s support, Armijo served in several different positions in the territorial government. In 1911, Armijo initiated an annual De Vargas Pageant to coincide with the Santa Fe Fiesta. That year, Armijo portrayed Don Diego de Vargas in the reenactment of the Spanish Reconquest of New Mexico.
