As the first bishop and archbishop of the Diocese of Santa Fe, Lamy’s tenure was filled with conflict with the local parish priests and parishioners specifically Taos priest Father Antonio José Martínez. The initial conflict resulted when Lamy reinstated tithing for parishioners, something Martinez has managed to have abolished. The subsequent conflicts involved removal of popular local priests and the attempted disbanding of the Penitente Brotherhood a community of found in most every Hispanic village in New Mexico.
