General Pershing led the Punitive Expedition into Chihuahua in 1916 and 1917 in search of Pancho Villa following his raid on Columbus. Although the expedition failed to capture Villa, the experience offered a means for the U.S. Military to prepare for its subsequent involvement in World War I in Europe.
