Typical in common law systems, land tenure provides a ruler the right to own the land, while the private owner is the renter or sub renter. In native tribe, the notion of land tenure did not exist. However, in negotiating indigenous treaties, Europeans used the term aboriginal tenure to grant natives the right to the land.
