The use of they instead of he or she was a conscious choice on the part of the instructors. For non-gender conforming people, the use of they allows for a third person pronoun usage. Some teachers may not be on board with this grammatical choice, even though grammar and language are always evolving. The pronoun you decide to use is up to you.
